Giuseppe Verdi(1813-1901): Ernani, Opera in 4 acts on a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave from the romantic drama “Hernani” by Victor Hugo A”grandiose and yet passionate libretto” that Verdi wanted to set to music according to his own statement. Verdi’s first staging of a drama by Victor Hugo (Hernani or Castilian honor), written in 1843, fascinates listeners with the close interweaving of “numbers” to form a structural unity and its depth including its ruthless destruction at the end. Ernani is however not one of his greatest public hits such as Nabucco or La Traviata like the other three first Verdi operas published in recent years by Marcus Bosch and the Cappella Aquileia. Bosch shows that even the allegedly somewhat weaker works of the great genius of opera have their special charms. In Ernani’s case, this is once again a very convincing success: Marcus Bosch, the Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno and the Cappella Aquileia, together with a hand-picked ensemble of singers, turn Verdi’s first great text of world literature into intensive music a dramati experience
