斯特拉文斯基在20世纪的古典音乐中掀起了震荡。他的前三部芭蕾舞剧——《火鸟》、《彼得鲁什卡》和《春之祭》，都是在1909年至1913年期间创作的，这三部作品带来了一种崭新的狂热节奏感，令观众痛苦，以至于引起了骚动，《春之祭》甚至在首演时引起了一场现场的骚乱。原因也不难分辨，在古典音乐中没有什么时刻比《火鸟》的开场更有魔力，可怕的弦乐轰鸣会让大白鲨颤抖，没有什么作品比《春之祭》的肉欲同时具有原始部落性的节奏更令人不安，也没有什么作品比《彼得鲁什卡》中鲁莽的潘趣与朱迪木偶更令人心惊胆颤。
