伯纳德·赫尔曼(Bernard Herrmann) 被广泛认为是好莱坞最重要的作曲家之一，他为超过50部电影配乐（此外还包括他为电视、广播和音乐厅的作品）做出了贡献，并以与奥森·威尔斯(Orson Welles)以及后来与阿尔弗雷德·希区柯克(Alfred Hitchcock)的合作而闻名。威尔斯在1940年代曾与罗伯特·史蒂文森(Robert Stevenson)的《简·爱》电影有过非正式的合作，正是威尔斯建议赫尔曼为该项目作曲。几个月后他就开始写信给朋友，告诉他们他计划创作一部关于《呼啸山庄》的歌剧。他花了八年时间完成了这部歌剧的声乐乐谱，并由他的妻子露西尔·弗莱彻(Lucille Fletcher)编写了剧本。虽然他在1966年指挥了一次对这部作品的录音，但他未能在有生之年看到现场演出。《“回声”(Echoes)》是在1965年为弦乐四重奏而作，后来由汉斯·索伦森（Hans Sørensen）改编为弦乐团版本，这个版本是本专辑中所听到的。
